Jane Murray was exhausted, yet elated as she prepared to take a break from a busy day Wednesday afternoon — a day after being elected the first woman Mayor of Portsmouth.

“It’s been pretty intense but it’s rewarding, and it’s kind of humbling, the kind of messages, phone calls and e-mails I have been getting today, but it has also given me the added strength I need, because I know how hard our tasks are,” Murray told the Portsmouth Daily Times.

Murray was asked if, though she has a two-month cushion, she needs to hit the ground running now.

“Absolutely. I’ve already been talking with some folks about some ideas and projects, and how we can approach different things, looking at some talents,” Murray said. “As I have told people, we want to get these boards and commissions set up. I want to bring in some folks to help us, and have special expertise that we need.”

Murray said she has been receiving numerous e-mails from people she has not met from across the community volunteering to be a part of her administration.

The city’s soon-to-be chief executive said information on how the people of the community can utilize their talents to assist her administration will soon be on her Web site — janemurrayformayor.com.

“They will give people ideas so they can sign up,” Murray said.

Murray said the calls and e-mails have been “overwhelming in a way, in that it is showing that people are ready to work, and are committed to make the community better. It is so gratifying.”

Murray was asked about the importance of involving citizens in the operation of city government.

“That is one of my key goals,” Murray said. “I think all of the employees of government will only be assisted by the public and their support as they look at the real issues and the problems and the potential ways of addressing them. So having the public involved is crucial.”

Murray garnered nearly 44 percent of the vote in the city to beat second-place finisher, write-in candidate Jerry Skiver, and incumbent Mayor James Kalb to become Mayor Tuesday.
