The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that six people were killed on Ohio roadways during the New Year’s holiday.

The holiday reporting period extended from midnight Monday, Dec. 31, 2012 through 11:49 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013.

This year’s figure of six is eight fewer than the total fatalities that occurred during last year’s holiday reporting period. However, last year’s holiday reporting period was four days.

The fatal crashes that occurred during this year’s holiday were in Franklin, Lucas, Meigs and Stark counties.

From Monday into Tuesday, there were 110 reported incidents on Scioto County roadways, 52 in Pike County, 19 in Adams County and 69 in Lawrence County.

In OSHP District 9 — which includes all the above counties as well as Jackson, Vinton, Hocking, Athens, Meigs and Gallia Counties — there were a total of 10 OVI arrests and 372 accidents.

The total number of people killed on the state’s roads increased in 2012 compared with the previous year’s record low. There were at least 1,056 deaths in 962 fatal crashes during the past year. That’s up from 1,015 deaths in 2011.
