My husband and I were asked by the American Cancer Society to volunteer with the Notes to Neighbor campaign. The goal for our neighborhood was $50.

We would like to thank our neighbors that contributed to the American Cancer Society. We more than doubled the goal. It is through donations that the American Cancer Society continues to fight cancer and help others. We appreciate our neighbors doing the same.

Thanks for the hard work to honor team

I am writing on behalf of the Wheelersburg 1950’s football team that was recognized before the home game Oct. 23. Many thanks goes out to the athletic director, Chris Porter. He did an exceptional job of notifying the remaining members about the recognition. The names of the first squad members were honored, including the deceased.

It meant so much to these former players to be out on the field again and recognized for their effort so long ago.

Also, a special thanks goes to Ruth Boll who did an excellent job of putting together a booklet with stories of the games written by Jim Joseph and printed in the Portsmouth Daily Times in the 1950s. The team will spend many good hours poring over the wins and losses of their day.

Dumping is not

appreciated

My letter is kind of a two in one. I live on Hasting’s Hill which is between Sciotoville and Wheelersburg. Our hill is beautiful, especially this time of the year when the leaves are changing. However if you drive up the 140 side of the hill and begin to admire all of nature’s splendor, you are soon snapped out of it by the couch and chair that has been dumped on the side of the road!

I just can’t understand why in the world people feel that they can dump their trash in our neighborhood! You wouldn’t want to live next to it so why would we? This has been a problem for years and for a while someone posted a no dumping sign and it stopped. Well, now the sign is gone and the dumping has resumed. Seriously? Do you really need a sign to know not to dump your trash along side of the road?

Another thing that is being dumped and/or left behind when people move away, is unwanted pets. How cruel can people be? There are so many cats on my street right now, who have not been spayed or neutered, that I cannot feed my own cats without sitting outside and guarding their food so that they can eat!

My husband and I are responsible pet owners who take the responsibility of caring for an animal very seriously. Every pet we own has been spayed or neutered and they are not out tormenting other animals. But with stray cats, who do you call? The dog catcher can’t do anything about them! And that’s just the cat problem.

There are also a lot of dogs that run around here. There are children on this hill who do not need to be subjected to the danger!

Bottom line is that Hasting’s Hill is not a dumping ground for your trash, old furniture, unwanted pets or anything else you want to get rid of!
