PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – Shawnee State scored four goals in the opening half, including a pair from Maddie Woodard as the Bears cruised to a 4-0 victory over Ohio Valley University to open the season at Shawnee Turf on Tuesday.
The victory marked the 100th in program history, the 71st from current head coach Rob Appell.
Mara McGee scored the first goal of the 2014 season in the 19th minute of play off a corner kick from Jessica Fair. The corner caromed off the foot of Schuyler Jones and landed at the feet of McGee, who finished, giving the Bears a 1-0 advantage.
Ten minutes later, Woodard landed the first goal of her career, beating the keeper on an assist from Jones. The freshman buried another into the net fifteen minutes later in the 44th minute. The assist came from senior Aubrey Sherman.
Following Woodard’s second finish, it took the Bears a mere 20 seconds to make it 4-0. Leslie Marsh capped the scoring of an assist from Jenny Campbell.
Freshman keeper Rachel Sexton recorded a shutout in her first collegiate match, earning the first victory of her career, as well.
The Bears return to action Friday for the Crimson Wave Soccer Invitational. SSU will face Clarke University on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. with an opponent and to be determined for Sunday’s contest.
