PORTSMOUTH, Ohio– Joseph Webster notched a pair of goals in the first half and added another in the second to lead the Shawnee State men’s soccer team to a season-opening, 3-0, victory over Ohio Valley University on Tuesday afternoon at Shawnee Turf.
Webster connected first in the 12th minute on a header that slipped past the OVU (0-1) keeper. The goal came off an assist from Ben Pulsford.
“I thought we played very well for first match of the year,” head coach Ron Goodson said. “We had 27 shots to create several scoring opportunities. Our possession was as good as I have seen us have in recent years.”
Webster again provided a spark in the 28th minute on another header to give the Bears a 2-0 advantage. Pulsford again added an assist, this time with the aid of Martyn Sayer. SSU (1-0) went into intermission with the same advantage.
The second frame went scoreless for a majority of the match until the 86th minute when Webster made it a trifecta. The senior beat the keeper for the first time off his foot, scoring the goal assisted by Mark Hergenrather.
A pair of keepers, Scott Adkins and Justin Mahlmeister, each played 45 minutes for the Bears to earn the shutout. Adkins (1-0) took the victory in the net.
“The back four did a great job limiting scoring chances for the opponents,” Goodson said. “The bench stepped up and gave us good minutes when we needed it. There are few things we need to clean up, but it was a fantastic start to the 2014 season.”
For each SSU home contest this season, the Bears will name a Portsmouth Pizzeria Man of the Match. Tuesday’s match saw, in no surprise, Webster handed the honor.
The Bears return to action in a pair of contests over the weekend. SSU will play the Indiana Institute of Technology at 7 p.m. on Saturday, and versus the University of Saint Francis at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Both matches will take place in Fort Wayne, Ind.
