The Shawnee State volleyball squad was selected to finish sixth by the coaches of the Mid-South Conference, officials announced Monday afternoon.
The Bears finished with a 17-15 overall record last season and added a 9-9 record in the Mid-South. Head coach Susan Shelton returns 10 players from last season, including senior outside hitters Paige Zelich and Kristi Humble. The two combined for 555 kills last season.
Reigning MSC champion Lindsey Wilson landed the top spot in the poll follow a perfect 18-0 conference record in 2013. The Blue Raiders snagged five first-place votes and a total of 47 points. Georgetown College followed closely behind in second with 45 points and the final three first-place votes.
St. Catharine College and Campbellsville University rounded out the top half of the poll, with 34 and 33 points respectively. The University of the Cumberlands came in at No. 5 with 23 points.
In the sixth spot, SSU garnered 21 points. Cumberland University and the University of Pikeville came in at Nos. 7 and 8, respectively.
Shawnee State opens the season in 10 days beginning with the Early Bird Tournament in Dearborn, Mich. The Bears first home match comes on Aug. 26 versus Mount Vernon Nazarene at 4 p.m.
