Former Minford girls’ basketball coach Scott Cayton has accepted the girls’ head coach position at Clay High School according to Clay Athletic Director Mike Rose.
“He brings a wealth of experience,” Rose said. ” He has experience in both leagues and he knows the coaches and knows the league, so I’m sure he’s going to continue our success in the girls’ program.”
Cayton had been teaching at Oak Hill High School while coaching at Minford, when he retired from his teaching position earlier this year. Before coaching at Minford, he was the head coach at Oak Hill for several years, where he won an SOC Title and coached future Ohio State star and WNBA Draft pick Jamie Lewis.
“We’ll miss him. We wish him well in his career at Clay,” said Minford Athletic Director Kristin Ruby.
The decision to hire him as a history teacher and basketball coach at Clay was approved at a June 20 school board meeting. Cayton will officially take over the program August 1.
Cayton will replace former Clay girls’ coach Kelly White, who took the Panthers to a District Final in his only season as head coach.
“Coach White was not a teaching staff member,” Rose said. “Each year it’s opened up to staff member. I can’t bring up a lot of details, just the fact that we decided to go in a different direction.”
Clay school superintendent Tony Mantel said that it was Kelly’s decision to step down.
“Kelly … and I had been talking, and I think he’s decided to go in another direction,” Mantel said. “When he stepped down, then we talked to Scott about coaching basketball, and he’s got a lot of experience there. We’re just very excited, very happy.”
Cayton will be joining his wife, Gretchen, who has been teaching Spanish at Clay for over a decade.
Last season, Cayton lead the Falcons to the Sectional Semifinals after recording a 48-41 victory over Portsmouth in the first round of the playoffs. James Parkes will be taking over for Cayton as girls head basketball coach at Minford.
