SSU Sports Report
After an eight-week hiatus from the NAIA Polls, the Shawnee State women’s basketball program appears to be peaking at the right time as the Bears have not been beaten in the month of February.
Riding a six-game winning streak heading into the final weekend of the regular season, the Bears received 19 voting points in the latest NAIA Weekly Poll. Shawnee State is the fifth team receiving votes (30th overall team).
This winning streak has seen the Bears (16-11, 9-7 MSC) rise from all the way to sole possession of fourth place in the Mid-South Conference.
Shawnee State is one of four MSC teams shown in the latest release of the NAIA Poll. Campbellsville, who the Bears have just beaten on the road during their most recent winning streak, 80-63, is ranked No. 4 this week.
The Bears have also swept the season series with Georgetown, who is ranked No. 8, while the University of the Cumberlands holds at No. 23 spot.
Campbellsville was ranked No. 5 when they were defeated by Shawnee State.
Georgetown held ranks of No. 5 and No. 6 when the Bears handed them a pair of defeats. Shawnee State also has a win over then-No. 3 in the NAIA DII Poll Indiana Wesleyan back in December.
The Bears are currently being led in scoring by Alannah Sheets, who is averaging an MSC-Leading 20.0 points per game in her senior campaign. Priscila Santos is averaging 16.4 points per game, while Diane Abbady is scoring 13.8 points per game to go along with her league leading 10.0 rebounds per game. Catrice Mitchell, the team’s final senior, is averaging 12 points per game in the last five contests.
Shawnee State will close out the regular season with a trip to the central time zone to face off with Cumberland and Lindsey Wilson. Both teams downed the Bears in Portsmouth back in November. Thursday’s game with Cumberland will start at 7 p.m. Eastern (6 p.m. Central). Saturday’s game against Lindsey Wilson, who is just one game behind the Bears in the conference standings heading into the weekend, tip at 3 p.m. Eastern (2 p.m. Central).
Final seeds for the Mid-South Conference Tournament will be determined after this weekend’s games are finished. The conference tournament will be hosted by Cumberland University. The women’s tournament will start on Friday, March 7 with the quarterfinals. The semifinals and finals will be played in the following two days.
