WHEELERSBURG — The Minford Falcons improved their record to 12-2 and 8-1 in SOC II play with a 55-46 victory over Wheelersburg Tuesday night.
Minford had three players score in double figures, led by Brandon Rowe with 15 points, while Trey Kelley and Jared McCray both added 13 points in the victory. Kelley hit three 3-point field goals for the Falcons who hit seven shots from behind the arc, four treys coming in the opening quarter.
“We had good offensive balance,” Minford coach Josh Shoemaker said. “Rowe did a good job of taking the ball to the basket, and Kelley and (Cody) Stapleton hit some big threes for us. McCray did a tremendous job of working in the paint.”
Shoemaker attributed the offensive performance to a quick start in the opening frame.
“We hit four threes and jumped out to an early lead,” Shoemaker said. “When you are able to knock down open shots, it opens up your post game.”
On the other side, the Pirates only managed to hit three shots on their way to scoring 13 points before the intermission. Wheelersburg leading scorer was held to seven points.
“We played a tremendous game defensively,” Shoemaker said. “Our kids did a good job of guarding their assignments. Cody Stapleton did a good job of guarding Dylan Miller tonight.”
While Miller was kept in check for much of the evening, the same cannot be said for Wheelerburg senior Tyler Claxon who scored 19 points.
“Claxon did a good job of beating us in transition, he attacked us off the dribble,” Shoemaker said.
Minford will return to the hardwood Friday as West comes to town. Shoemaker expects the Senators to be ready for the matchup.
“West will come out focused,” Shoemaker said. ” … They have a good club and will give us a good game.”
