In a new “Getting to know” series, this week’s feature shines the spotlight on Green senior Jessica Patrick.
Green coach Melissa Knapp chose Patrick because she is the senior leader and only four-year member of the Bobcats squad. The following answers were provided by Patrick, and have not been edited or changed.
Do you watch sports? If so, who is your favorite athlete?
I occasionally watch some college basketball games. I am not as focused on a favorite athlete as a favorite team. I love the University of Kentucky Wildcats.
Many athletes have a pregame ritual, what is your pregame routine?
I always have to listen to music to prepare for a game. I find that songs by Eminem such as “Lose Yourself” and “Till I Collapse” help me to become mentally ready before a game.
Who is a “hero” in your life and why?
One of my heroes in my life is my grandfather who passed away a little less than two years ago. He was very supportive of me playing basketball and enjoyed coming to my games. He worked hard throughout his life to ensure that his family would be secure for the future.
If you could meet any person, living or dead, who would you like to meet? Why?
I would love to meet Pistol Pete Maravich. I would want to meet him, because I know how great of a basketball player that he was. When I was younger my dad bought me a collection of videos that Pistol Pete had made to teach the fundamentals of basketball. I loved to watch them and try to preform the skills myself. I learned a lot from watching these videos. The reason that I always pick the jersey number 44 is because 44 was one of the numbers that pistol Pete had during his basketball career.
If you could donate $50,000 to any charity, who would it be and why?
I would give the donation to “STOMP Out Bullying,” because they teach effective solutions to deal with different types of bullying. They also provide help to people in need or at risk of suicide. They raise awareness of bullying in order to prevent it. I think this is a great organization, especially for struggling high school students.
What is the best compliment you have ever received?
When I think of the best compliment that I have ever received, a recent comment comes to mind. It was directly after a basketball game. My team had just beat Phelps in a recent tournament. We were shaking hands with the other team after the game, and one of the coaches on the other team grabbed my shoulder. He complimented me by saying that I did a good job of getting in there and getting the ball when under the basket. He did not compliment anyone else on our team, so I felt like this was really special for him to compliment me.
What are your goals for college?
When I go to college I hope to enroll as a full time student, work a job, and slowly become more independent. I am looking into majoring in either Political Science or Criminal Justice. I plan to eventually attend law school after completing my undergraduate degree.
What is your ultimate career goal?
My ultimate career goal is to become a successful lawyer. I hope to take part in coaching some basketball in the future. I would also like to take the time to travel one day.
