Piketon sends runners to state meet

A pair of Piketon runners will compete in next Saturday’s state meet after finishing in the 16 individual qualifying spots.
The Redstreaks will send juniors Kane Dixon and Zack Varney to the grounds of National Trails Raceway in Hebron as Dixon finished third with a time of 16:42.73 while Varney’s time of 17:01.93 was good enough for 11th in the boys Division II race. As a team, Piketon finished seventh.
Sheridan senior Matt Bromley won the Division II boys race with a time of 16:01.99 as his team won the regional. Millersburg West Holmes, Gnadenhutten Indian Valley and Unioto also qualified for the state meet as teams.
In Division III, Wheelersburg was paced by a 77th-place finish by senior Alex Mullins, who crossed the stripe at 1859.49. The Pirates were 14th in the team standings.
Ironton’s Chad Garris finished with a time of 19:58.31 and was 93rd, Western’s Nick Shanks was 98th with a time of 20:09.26.
Columbus Grandview Heights senior Luke Evans won the Division III boys race with a time of 16:21.64. Sugarcreek Garaway won the regional team title while Fort Frye, Leesburg Fairfield and Caldwell also advanced.
In girls Division III action, South Webster freshman Sydney McCoy was the highest local individual finisher as her time of 21:18.30 was 37th-best overall. The Jeeps finished 13th as a team. Wheelersburg senior Sarah Willis closed out her high school career with a time of 22:54.14, which put her in 73rd place.
Garaway’s Rachel Wentworth turned in a time of 19:06.66 for the girls individual title as well as the team title. Columbus Academy, Mount Gilead and the Columbus School for Girls also advanced to Hebron.
