When Wheelersburg takes the field Friday night at Jackson’s Alumni Stadium, the host Ironmen will not be the only team with eyeballs on the Pirates.

Those eyes will include the rest of the state of Ohio after Wheelersburg (4-0) ascended to the top of the Associated Press Division V polls that were released Monday night. The Pirates, who checked in at No. 2 in the initial polls released last Monday and defeated Fairland 49-32, replaced Dayton Chaminade-Julienne on top of the standings after the Eagles lost 12-9 at Cincinnati Purcell Marian.

Chaminade dropped to seventh in the poll, the highest-ranked team in the division with a loss. The other five unbeatens between Wheelersburg and the Eagles are Coldwater, St. Clairsville, Findlay Liberty-Benton, Cincinnati Hills Christian and Orrville.

The final three spots in the Division V Top 10 include 4-0 Hamilton Badin as well as Columbia Crestview and Martins Ferry, both with identical 3-1 marks. Also of interest, Baltimore Liberty Union is 15th and 17th belongs to Columbus Bishop Hartley. The Hawks are the top team in the Region 17 computer points according to projections by JoeEitel.com with the Pirates a spot below.

Wheelersburg is not the only area team to receive recognition by the statewide media. After a 34-6 win Saturday night at Portsmouth, Minford (4-0) checks into the others receiving votes at No. 19 in Division IV. The Falcons travel to Oak Hill in their final tuneup before the SOC II portion of the schedule begins next Friday.

Speaking of the Oaks (4-0), they are 16th in Division VI. This weekend’s meeting at Davis Stadium between Minford and Oak Hill is just one year after the Falcons won 20-19 in triple overtime over the visiting Oaks.

Valley (4-0) also received votes as the Indians are tied for 17th in Division VI. They will also be involved in a battle of two 4-0 clubs Friday night when undefeated South Point comes to Lucasville.

In the Southeast District, Chillicothe is 10th in Division III, Miami Trace is 11th in Division IV and Trimble is fifth in Division VII.

Notre Dame (4-0), which did not receive enough votes for consideration in this week’s Division VII poll, will host Cleveland Villa-Angela St. Joseph Saturday night. The Vikings (4-0) are seventh in this week’s Division VI poll.
