MCDERMOTT — Big plays can be the deciding factor over the course of a football game.
For the Northwest Mohawks, those big plays came in the form of Ben Lajoye and Micah Campbell. The duo combined for 269 yards and five touchdowns on just 14 carries to lead host Northwest to its first win since 2011 in a 39-12 rout of East.
After both teams traded possessions for the vast majority of the first quarter, the Mohawks would proceed to march down the field – albeit quickly – on a five-play, 55-yard drive that was capped off by a Lajoye 21-yard touchdown run to put Northwest up by a 7-0 score with 1:48 left in the quarter.
The Mohawks would strike again on the first play of the second quarter as Campbell would get the carry off of the right side and cut back across the middle of the gridiron for a 61-yard touchdown run to put his team up by two scores with only 56 seconds gone in the second quarter.
After an Akia Brown fumble set up Northwest with good field position, Lajoye would take the ball off of the left side and would cut back up field, where he would outrun all of the Tartan defenders to paydirt to put the Mohawks up 20-0 with just over eight minutes remaining in the half, a score that would carry over all the way to halftime.
On the opening possession of the third quarter, Northwest’s Justin Miller sacked Michael Stiltner and forced East to go three-and-out for the sixth time in what turned out to be eight total occurrences. Lajoye took the carry off of the left side and would outrace the East defenders for his third touchdown of the night, a 31-yard tally that put the Mohawks up by a score of 26-0.
The Tartans would continue to see the bounce of the ball go against them as Shauntavian Martin kicked the ball high into the air on a punt, and as the ball touched down at the East 25, took a huge roll backward, finally coming to rest at the East 15-yard line.
With a golden opportunity to score yet again, Campbell would take charge and score from 15 yards out to give the Mohawks a 33-0 lead with 2:53 left in the third quarter and giving Campbell his second score of the day.
Northwest would come back out in the fourth quarter and proceeded to go on a 13-play, 74-yard drive took exactly 6:10 off of the clock in the final period. The drive was capped off when Chris Silhavy scored on a two-yard plunge into the end zone to put Northwest up 39-0.
East added couple of touchdowns late as Jonathan Stapleton and Brown scored touchdowns on runs of three and 40 yards respectively. The Mohawks will entertain Chillicothe Huntington next Friday while the Tartans travel to Green for the first of two matchups against the Bobcats this season. The first game will not count toward the SOC I standings.
