The Daily Times learned Monday that, for the second-straight year, the Cincinnati Reds will host and honor the Wheelersburg baseball team in a pregame ceremony for winning a state championship.

This year, the Reds are set celebrate the accomplishments of the Division III champion Pirate baseball team before the Aug. 9 game against the San Diego Padres. First pitch for the Friday night contest is slated for 7:10 p.m. with postgame fireworks to follow.

Wheelersburg won its second-straight state championship during June’s state tournament at Huntington Park in Columbus. The Pirates came from behind to defeat Bloom-Carroll 5-4 to cap off a 29-4 season.

In 2012, Wheelersburg completed a 30-2 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Lima Central Catholic in the state championship and were honored at Great American Ball Park later in the summer. The Pirates have three baseball state championships in program history, the first coming in 1996.

The game will also mark the sixth of a nine-game homestand for Cincinnati before a road trip take takes the defending NL Central Division champions to Chicago and Milwaukee.
