Children are blessed through ‘Cans for Christ’

For four years, Brandon Hoyme of McDermott has been on a mission to provide families in the community with food for their children at Christmas time through the non-profit organization, ‘Cans for Christ,’ (CFC) which Hoyme founded. Volunteers gathered at Seventh Street Christian Baptist Church (SSCBC) on Monday for a packaging event.

“We are here at Seventh Street Christian Baptist Church and have come together collectively to bag food, and this food will be given out to kids in the local food programs at each elementary school,” Hoyme said. “This year we have collected 15,800 items to distribute to children in need in the local area. “

On Monday, numerous volunteers gathered at SSCBC where the thousands of canned goods were housed to prepare the bags and to get them ready for distribution.

Hoyme addressed the group, thanking them for their devotion to the cause of CFC. He also gave special recognition to three exceptional volunteers.

“One of the volunteers that we want to recognize is Becky Sturgill Crabtree, who has been doing a street ministry, and she has started five successful pantries in Scioto County,” he said. “Right now she’s at Minford Nazarene where she runs a pantry there. We also recognized Josh and Cheryl Mitchell. Josh and Cheryl will be the new leaders for Cans For Christ next year. I will still be helping, and will still be involved. I will be doing missions and will be in Haiti next year, so they are going to be running while I am doing missions.”

Lori Ruth Wheeler was also among the contributors to CFC that was recognized on Monday.

“She is the manager of the Dollar General there in Wheelersburg, and she contacted me about giving out six boxes of toys that we could also give out to the kids,” he said. “And so, we wanted to recognize Lori, and Becky, and the Mitchell’s for their willingness just to help in the ways in which they have. I try to tell people that it is not about me, it is about God and other people, and other people are the ones who make up Cans For Christ, and they are the ones who bring the food to distribute to others to be a blessing at Christmas time.”
