September represented the beginning of your new educational or seasonal goals and requires a plan of action to balance your personal, work, social, and student life. Looking back on your start date, how would you rate your current progress?
At this very moment you may feel that life is very challenging and leaves you mentally and physically exhausted. You feel certain you are moving in the right direction because you are following your vision and your plan of action. However, at this point you ask yourself “why did I think I could accomplish all of this?”
I am here to inform you that your problem is not your goals but a lack of mental and physical energy needed to help you focus and to achieve those goals.
Your solution lies in learning not take yourself too seriously by learning to laugh for the health of it in order to: (1) reduce stress,(2) create energy, and(3) build working relationships as you communicate from day to day.
Your automatic response may be “how can I laugh when life is pressing me from all directions?” Stop and take a moment right now to remember these encouraging words, “this too shall pass” and remind yourself that each day is a test to see if you are ready to move to the next level in your life.
Because I strongly believe in the benefits of positive emotions and emotional intelligence, I will take a moment to share how touching your body, mind, and spirit with laughter can provide wellness and many benefits in an effortless way.
Harvard Health Publications (Harvard Medical School), Stanford Medical School Laughter report, Steve Wilson Psychologist, and Help Guide.org provides numerous benefits of laughter. The good news is these benefits cost you very little. The only requirement to benefit is that you take a few moments of your time to relax, laugh, and see your situation in a less serious light.
The benefits of laughter will now be discussed in in three categories: your body, mind, and spirit.
Let’s begin with the body: According to medical studies mentioned above, laughter can boost your immune system, lower stress hormones, prevent heart disease, lower blood pressure and more.
We will now move on to your mind: Laughter reduces your anxiety and fear as you let go for a moment. Your stress will be reduced as you allow yourself to laugh which improves your mood and alertness. It has been stated that the effects of a good hearty laugh can be felt up to 45 minutes later. That is what I call a mental refreshment!
Last, but not least: Your spirit will benefit as your laughter allows you to laugh at yourself and realize that we are all human and have similar humorous stories to share. This realization helps to build healthy individual and group relationships as you learn to accept your strengths and weakness as well as those of others. You learn from past experiences and gain wisdom and confidence.
In conclusion, I have shared a few benefits and reasons why you should laugh for the health of it. I have shared some great resources that will give you many more reasons to stop and take a laughter break to extend your physical, mental, and spiritual health.
I encourage you to take a moment to think of a humorous moment in your life that prompted you to roll with laughter. If possible, reach out to that involved person to make a connection and enjoy the mental refreshment together.
