The two-year roadway and bridge rehabilitation project in West Portsmouth is nearing completion according to Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) officials.
The project, began in 2013 and called for the rehabilitation of 13 bridges, replacing guardrail and resurfacing U.S. 52 from Township Road 569 (Old U.S. 52) to the Scioto River bridges, S.R. 852, S.R. 73/104 from just north of the S.R. 239 junction to the Second Street bridge at Portsmouth, and the on/off ramps at the interchanges.
Complete General Construction was awarded the work contract in 2013, valued at $12 million. Kathleen Fuller, Public Information Officer with the Ohio Department of Transportation District 9 said the contractor is finishing up a few items, with the project nearing completion.
“The are still working on the overpass bridge, going over (U.S.) 52 that connects what we call State Route 852,” Fuller said.
She said the contractor recently poured approach slabs for the bridge.
“They’ve got different parts of the bridge work wrapping up now and they are getting ready to do the final resurfacing on 73 and 104,” Fuller said.
She said among the work left to be completed includes, the rehabilitation of a structural wall, sealing of some concrete walls on bridges and various others items. Once that part of the project is complete, Fuller said the contractor will have to do some striping of the roadways that along with the remaining paving work.
“There is well more than a months worth of work left to be done. We’re looking at mid to late September (as a completion time line),” Fuller said. “The project is nearing completion.”
Fuller said the anticipated completion date is still inline with the original projected completion date.
ODOT recently announced the start of a paving project on U.S. 23 in Pike County.
According to ODOT, “crews from Shelly and Sands, Incorporated are paving 5.25 miles of U.S. 23 from the Pike-Scioto County line to just north of Township Road 603 (Seif Road). Construction also includes paving the interchange ramps to the U.S. Department of Energy/American Centrifuge Facility, as well as repairing the structures over the Norfolk Southern Railroad County Road 84 (Wakefield Mound Road) and over Big Run Creek.”
While the project is ongoing U.S. 23 will be maintained at one lane in each direction around the area of the project. The project is estimated to be complete by mid-fall.
