The Boneyfiddle Art Center (BAC) is welcoming artist Chuck Clevenger to instruct a watercolor workshop that will span two days.
Clevenger is a New Boston native, and son of Boneyfiddle Artist Charlie Clevenger. He has years of experience and teaches as an arts professor at Cedarville University.
“He is quite acclaimed for his abilities, both watercolor and piano,” Director Jamie Benedict said. “It is a really fabulous opportunity for the community. Normally, something like this, with a two-day workshop taught by someone of his caliber, would cost you around $300.”
Admission into the class is only $25 for BAC artists and community members and $50 for nonmembers. Benedict said the cost was subsided with the help of grant money from the City of Portsmouth Hotel/Motel Tax.
“He is an unusual combination of someone who is not only talented as a painter, but a great educator as well,” Benedict said. “Someone of his skill teaching, and being good at it is a rarity.”
Benedict said that she took watercolor classes with six different instructors while living in Washington and pursuing higher education and never once had an educator so accomplished as she has with Clevenger.
Clevenger will be teaching transparency, controlling moisture, modeling shapes with light and shadow, saving whites, stopping in time and more while completing a free painting, a still life complement study, a full color painting, and a head and shoulders piece.
“Anytime you have an opportunity to express yourself really fortifies your self definition,” Benedict said. “Painting is a safe, contained way of expressing how you’re feeling in life, whether it is joy or sadness.
Interested parties in the workshop need to register before Monday, Sept. 8. Forms can be found online or at BAC.
The Boneyfiddle Arts Center is at 546 Second St., and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is no charge for visiting the art center and guests are appreciated.
