If you would like to have some fun, catch some fish, and help our deployed soldiers and their families at the same time, you will want to be at GrayWolf Paylake in Otway this Saturday (June 28). GrayWolf Paylake is sponsoring a catfish tournament to raise money for the 1191st Engineers Company, out of Portsmouth, currently training in Texas and soon heading for Afghanistan.
Lori Ross of GrayWolf Pay Lake said before the members of the 1191st leave on deployment, they should get a four day pass to visit with their families, and those staging the catfish tournament are in hopes they will raise money to help the spouses and families with gas cards, food certificates, and/or cash.
“We want to help these families get down there,” Ross said. “They only get four days. That’s the plan right now. Of course with the military that can change too. We just want to help them out just as much as we can.”
Ross said the idea for the tournament comes from the heart.
“We can raise enough to help the families get a short visit with their loved ones before they deploy,” Ross said. “I come from a huge military family. My father was a World War II vet, three years with the Sixth Infantry Division. My brothers, my brother-in-law, uncles, big time military. Right now I have a nephew who is flight navigator for the Blue Angels and my son-in-law is with the 1191st. He didn’t get deployed this time because of medical reasons, but he was over in Iraq for a year in 2004. We’re big military.”
Ross said half of the tournament charges will go to the families and the other half will be used for the winnings of the tournament.
The catfish tournament format will be a two-person team total weight tournament and will begin at 6 p.m. and last until midnight. The price will be $10 per person and $20 per team, plus the cost of the fish ticket - $8 for 6 hours, $12 for 12 hours, $24 for 24 hours. Kids under 10 fish free.
Ross said the Scioto Ribber will be cooking for the event. The price of the dinner will be $15 and they will be donating $5 from each meal to the 1191st.
“Even if you don’t fish, you can come with your out with your families to support our local heroes, and enjoy a beautiful day at the lake,” Ross said.
