Jo Ann Aeh, acting executive secretary of the Portsmouth Civil Service Commission, says the city of Portsmouth is accepting applications from individuals who want to become a firefighter with the Portsmouth Fire Department.
Aeh said all United States Citizens are eligible to apply, and must have a high school education or the equivalent. Successful applicants must pass a rigid physical examination prior to being appointed as a firefighter. State law forbids the original appointment of a firefighter on or after his or her 31st birthday. Applications are available in the office of the Portsmouth City Solicitor on the second floor of the city’s Municipal Building, or online.
Applications may be picked up beginning, Friday, May 2, 2014, at 9 a.m. Completed applications must be received in the solicitor’s office on or before Monday, June 2, 2014s at 2 p.m. Applications must be typed or printed in ink.
A written examination will be conducted on Saturday, June 14, at 1 p.m. at the Notre Dame Activity Center (CAY), 2310 Sunrise Ave., in Portsmouth, Ohio. All applicants must report to the testing site between 12:30 p.m. and 12:40 p.m., with two pencils and one pen.
Aeh said veterans of the Armed Services of the United States who are residents of the State of Ohio who qualify and receive a passing grade on the examination will receive an additional 20 per cent on the examination in accordance with state law and local Civil Service Rules.
A complete copy of Form DD-214 must be attached to the application for the examination. Failure to attach such proof of honorable discharge will result in disqualification for the veteran’s credit. Proof of discharge must be submitted to the Civil Service Commission prior to the deadline for applications, which is June 2, 2014 at 2 p.m.
