Judge David E. Spears, the first Judge of Scioto County Court of Common Pleas and Domestic Relations, is continuing to contribute to local history. On April 17, 2014, at 11 a.m., a portrait of Spears will be placed in the court alongside the portraits other past local Judges for permanent display.

In an effort to preserve the history of Scioto County and the Scioto County Judiciary, the Domestic Relations Court will display Judge Spears’ portrait alongside the portraits of other past judges who have presided over the Appellate/Domestic Relations Courtroom.

As a Judge, Spears worked for the Portsmouth Municipal Court from 1988 to 1995. Spears then served in the Scioto County Court of Common Pleas, Domestic Relations Division from 1995 until 2011.

Judge Jerry Buckler, of the Scioto County Court of Common Pleas, said he respects Spears, and felt privileged to work with him.

“Our Domestic Relations Division of the Court of Common Pleas was created by an act of the State Legislature over 20 years ago. Judge David E. Spears was the first Judge of this Court. During my years as a practicing attorney, it was a privilege to practice in front of Judge Spears. I always found him to exhibit a professional demeanor and calmness that was appropriate for the domestic court. After all, most issues in our court are not calm at all. I have always respected Judge Spears,” Buckler said.

Buckler said he deemed it appropriate to work to add Spears’ portrait to the court’s history.

“Our courtroom presently contains portraits of several prior Scioto County Judges,” Buckler said. I felt it appropriate that Judge Spears be added to the permanent history of our county and our court. I believe it is our responsibility to maintain the history of Scioto County and especially, the history of our beautiful Courthouse.”

The courts are extending an invitation to the community, as they honor and welcome Judge David E. Spears and his family back to the courtroom.
