With the business of the the holiday season and other factors, organizers with the Regional Health Summit have decided to move the event from Jan. 24 to April 11.

First offered more than a year ago, the summit — held at Shawnee State University — is titled Regional Health Summit No. 2 - Working Together Towards Wellness.

“The focus of this year’s summit will be implementing workplace wellness programs,” said Ed Hughes, CEO of Compass Community Health.

He said there is going to be a push for as many employers within the tri-state area to attend.

“United Health Care is going to give an overview about how health and wellness and impact to the workplace, in terms of productivity and the cost of health insurance,” Hughes said.

According to Hughes, Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) will guide participants through having some smoking cessation and tobacco cessation programs available. In the afternoon sessions, the summit will focus on tobacco prevention in schools.

“While there, they will be able to hear about tobacco prevention programming that might be able to be linked to the school systems,” Hughes said. “I know the schools feel very overwhelmed in terms of being able to do anything extra. We’re looking at ways the community could help support those efforts within the schools.”

He said the Ohio Department of Health will have representatives at the summit.

“During this time we’re looking for members of the Scioto County Health Coalition to meet with Ohio Department of Health in regards to future planing activities. We’re (Scioto County Health Coalition) starting to attract the attention of a lot of folks in terms of progress being made,” Hughes said.
