Of the New Year’s resolutions, securing gainful employment is perhaps one of the most crucial. After five months of diligent searching, Portsmouth resident, Melanie Pankey landed a job at The Counseling Center.

For five months, Melanie has filled out applications, searching around the local area in search of what is becoming increasingly scarce — a job.

“One of my resolutions for this year was to find a job, and I just got hired. I am now a Residential Advisor at The Counseling Center. I am really excited about beginning this new position,” Pankey said.

According to Pankey, the position involves working with women that are going through a drug addiction treatment program.

“This entails making sure the women, the residents, go to their meetings to help them maintain sobriety. I will also help them with various things, like their duties inside of the home. It is basically helping women to get back out into society in a sober manner,” she said.

Pankey said the position that she will be working in hits close to home.

“This job suits me really well because I grew up with both parents who were drug addicts. My mom died at an early age, and I went through foster care. I know all about this kind of life because of my own personal experiences,” she said.

She said her ability to relate to the population of women that she will work with will be unhindered.

“There is really nothing that any of these women or their children that come through this facility that I won’t be able to relate to and help them in some way,” she said.

Pankey said she will be working with women has not received the assignment of which building she will work. She offered advice to those who are still searching for a job.

“The only thing that I can tell people is, you’ve got to want to work. It’s not by luck. I put applications in everywhere, and I called almost everyday,” she said.

Pankey also attributes the acquisition of her new position to her faith.

“The only way that I can describe it, is to say that it was a blessing. I prayed about it. I have truly been blessed,” she said.

Pankey said she is looking forward to starting her new position within the next two weeks.
