On Monday night Portsmouth City Council approved an appropriation of $30,000 from the city’s general fund to cover potential overtime expenses for the remainder of the year for the fire department.
According to the ordinance, “Currently there are insufficient funds allocated to continue to pay overtime for the fire department. Based on the vacation schedule for the remainder of the year, fire department staffing will fall below the minimum required to staff each apparatus. In such a case, the department will be unable to maintain the current level of service to the citizens of the City of Portsmouth.
Whereas, $75,000 has been appropriated into the 2013 General Fund Fire Department Overtime line. The department has saved approximately $51,812 in salaries from unanticipated vacancies which occurred this year. The department has expended $143,621 as of Oct. 31, 2013. It is anticipated that overtime costs for Nov. through Dec. 31, 2013, will make it necessary to appropriate an additional $30,000 for overtime.”
When the ordinance was brought to a vote it passed five votes in favor and zero against. Second Ward Councilman was absent from the meeting.
