Healthy Choices Kentucky is announcing plans to host the first in a series of geocaching adventures. The kickoff for the series is Feb. 8, 2014.
Healthy Choices Kentucky is an organization formed to help counteract Eastern Kentucky’s high obesity rates.
HCK is seeking to utilize geocaching for as a means of fun and exercise for area residents in Boyd and Greenup counties.
Geocaching is a treasure hunt which takes place outdoors in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) enabled device to hide and seek containers known as geocaches.
The first adventure is set to take place in the city of Ashland, with all caches within walking distance of each other in downtown.
The first 100 people to successfully complete the adventure will receive a unique Ashland coin.
Participants must have previously downloaded a geocaching app to their smartphones or have a GPS capable of downloading geocache locations.
Participants also must obtain a passbook, which will be available at the Ashland Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Boyd County Library, or via download at healthychoiceskentucky.com.
Geocachers who find each of the 15 cache locations and place one of the stickers inside the cache of the passbook can then return the passbook to the convention bureau or library to collect the coin.
