RUSSELL, Ky. — Maria’s Manila Asian Market hosted a bake sale Saturday for the Philippine relief effort. The Philippine Islands were hit by Typhoon Haiyan leaving nearly 4,000 people dead.

The community of Russell, Ky. and surrounding areas, came out to show their support, providing a total of $3,666.89 to be allocated for victims of the recent storms that hit the Philippine Islands.

Maria Lemaster, owner Maria’s Manila Asian Market, and native of Manila, the capital of the Philippines, said she is overwhelmed by the massive amount of support they received.

“I was just overwhelmed by just how the community came out and showed their concern. My country really needs help right now, and I have many close friends that are in need of help. We are sending the money back home,” Lemaster said.

She said her family members escaped the wrath of Typhoon Haiyan.

“Mom just left about two weeks ago to visit my sisters in Manila, which was not hit. They got a lot of the wind and rain, but they are fine,” Lemaster said.

Although her family was not directly affected by the storm, Lemaster said she felt very badly for those who were affected.

She said the city of Tacloban was greatly impacted by the storm, and all other cities along the east cost of Leyte.

Lemaster said she joined forces with other members of the local Filipino community to aid their native land. Baked goods such as cupcakes and fudge were some of the desserts made available to purchase.

She said customers lined up for the cause to purchase the baked good items.

“We are planning another bake sale that will take place after the Thanksgiving holiday. We do not have a date for the next one, but it will be soon,” Lemaster said.

Donations to Phillipine relief can be made by visiting Maria’s Manila Asian Market, located at 15624 Diederich Blvd. in Russell. Donations may also be made by visiting any branch of City National bank payable to Maria Lemaster Relief Funds.
