On Thursday the Scioto County Commissioners held a bid opening for property that was deemed of no use to the county in West Portsmouth.

In September the commissioners passed a resolution that read, “the Scioto County Board of Commissioners own property in Washington Township…identified as parcel number 27-3595.000 and the the Scioto County Board of Commissioners are of the opinion that (a) portion of parcel number 27-3595.00…is no longer needed for public use.”

Attached to the resolution was a survey of the portion of the land in question.

The survey was completed by Chairman of the Scioto County Commissioner Mike Crabtree as he is also a professional surveyor. The portion of land deemed no longer needed is 0.7862 acres of land.

By law, the land had to be put out for bid by the commissioners and on Thursday a bid opening was held. Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) was the sole bidder for the land at $100,000.

At the time of the opening there was some debate among the commissioners if they could award the bid to SOMC. After the debate, the bid was accepted and referred to Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Danielle Parker for processing.

SOMC had shown interest in purchasing the property to construct a medial facility.

In June, at the request of the Daily Times, SOMC issued the statement, “As a part of our commitment to improving access to exceptional primary care throughout our area, Southern Ohio Medical Center is considering several options for establishing a physical presence in West Portsmouth.”

Officials with SOMC could not be reached for comment following Thursday’s bid opening.
