FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is reporting that work is ramping up on a $4 million Transportation Cabinet project to install 28.5 miles of paved shoulders and more than 30 turning lanes along U.S. 23 in Greenup County.

Contractors this week began milling and shoulder paving operations along northbound U.S. 23 beginning at the Boyd-Greenup county line.

Work will require lane closures, and will progress northbound to Ky. 8 near South Shore, then return on southbound lanes. Crews are also continuing to install right- and left-turn lanes as well as median acceleration lanes at various locations along the four-lane highway in Greenup County:

Extend dual left turn lanes on NB 23 to Ky. 693 (Diedrich Boulevard)

Right turn lane NB 23 to Chinn Street, and right turn lane SB 23 to KY 693

Right turn lane NB 23 to Heaberlin Road

Right turn lanes on NB and SB 23 to Ky. 503

Right turn lanes, median acceleration lanes at three industrial locations: 8.3-8.9 mile markers

Extend right turn lane on Ky. 2541

Right turn lane SB 23 to Ky. 2

Right turn lane NB 23 and median acceleration lane SB 23 at KYTC facility

Right turn lane NB 23 and median acceleration lane SB 23 at Muskateer Drive

Additional lane on Ky. 10 approaching US 23 to accommodate traffic movements

Right turn lanes NB 23 at Ky. 3116

Right turn lane SB 23 and left turn lane NB 23 to Ky. 1043

Right turn lane NB 23 and SB 23 to Ky. 2542 (Johnson Road)

Right turn lanes and left turn lanes, NB and SB 23 at Ky. 3117

Right turn lane SB 23 at Ky. 1043 and NB 23 at Ky. 2538

Right turn lane and left turn median lane SB 23 at Biggs Lane

Right turn lane NB 23 to Kings Addition and SB 23 to McKell Lane

Right turn lane SB 23 to Bulldog Lane, and left turn median lane SB 23 into McKell Elementary

Right turn lane SB 23 and NB 23 to Ky. 7

The right lane of US 23 in each direction will be closed in areas where crews are paving shoulders. Where turn lanes are being installed, one-lane traffic is also possible. Motorists should watch for merging traffic and possible delays during daytime work hours. Construction will continue through December.

The Transportation Cabinet awarded the project to Mountain Enterprises under a $4.13 million low-bid contract.
