A Portsmouth man has died following an altercation with another man over the weekend. Dead is Jonathan D. Clark, 44, of 1919 Mabert Rd.
Portsmouth Police Chief Robert Ware said a fight occurred on Center Street in Portsmouth around 7 p.m. Monday. Two people were involved in the altercation, but one of those then became involved in a fight with Clark who had been a bystander to the first fight.
“They get into an altercation in which the deceased sustains a head injury,” Ware said. “The autopsy will determine what caused that head injury, and whether there was a specific weapon used or if it was the result of his hitting the sidewalk or whatever the case may be. Then the investigation will move forward as to potential charges against the second party involved in the fight.”
As Ware was making the announcement, Detective Sergeant Jim Charles came in and informed Ware that they had arrested the other person involved in that altercation, James E. “Eddie” Loper, Jr., 51, of the Center Street address where the altercation took place on unrelated charges.
Ware said the police received a call from Clark’s residence that he was deteriorating. They responded to the residence and Clark was taken to Southern Ohio Medical Center and later flown to Grant Medical Center in Columbus where he died at 2 a.m. Monday. Charles said the autopsy was being performed by the Franklin County Coroner’s Office.
