If you could help a veteran, would you? You can for as little as a $1 item. Russell D. Williams American Legion Auxiliary Unit 471 is collecting personal, everyday care items and other items for patients at the Chillicothe VA Hospital.
Betty Taylor of Post 471 said items needed include soap, lotions, toothpaste, denture cleaner, deodorant, shampoo, reading and puzzle books, cards, paper and postage stamps and the list goes on.
“I went to a (Ohio American Legion Auxiliary) Department convention, and everytime I have gone to the convention, and the woman over our district has taken a loss every year in funding,” Taylor said. “So, I thought that this year I would try to help. We just recently had our fall convention and I had sown ditty bags for the veterans. That’s a bag you make out of material to put things inside of that they give each one of the patients when they come into the hospital, and it consists of every day personal hygiene items.”
Taylor said shoelaces are used to tie the tops of the bags, and local manufacturer Sole Choice donated three bags of shoelaces.
“They were so thankful for everything they got,” Taylor said. “The items I had collected were just from four or five people, and the valued the products that we sent at $400. When we send that in to them, they gather it up from the whole state of Ohio, and then it goes to (Washington) D.C., and that’s what keeps us non-profit. So I’m trying to help the veterans, and I’m trying to help the Legion remain non-profit.”
Taylor said the hospital does supply the necessities while the patients are in the hospital, and the donated items are given to them when they are dismissed from the hospital.
Taylor said anyone wishing to make a donation of cash or items may do so by dropping their donations off at Post 471, located at 950 Gallia St. in Portsmouth, or they can call Taylor at 740-259-3249, and she will pick up any donations.
