VANCEBURG, Ky. — Construction of the Nelson Brothers, LLC $17 million facility is underway as of Sept. 22, 2013 in Lewis County.

The new plant is being built on Kentucky 8, along the Ohio River, near St. Paul.

Judge-Executive Todd Ruckel of Vanceburg, Ky. said they are excited about the new plant and how it will enhance the area.

“We are very excited about having them, they will be a good community partner. They are in the process of hiring local folks for the positions and they will end up with a total of 75 employees, and will put five million dollars back into our local community,” Ruckel said.

Trace Construction is handling the construction of the new plant and will employ 100 people.

Ruckel said there is no need for residents to be concerned about having the facility in the area.

“They make a blasting agent, that is what they make. They have been in business for over 50 years and have never had any type of explosive-related accidents,” Ruckel said.

He said he bases his knowledge of Nelson Brothers from one of the other plants which he visited.

“They are very good at what they do and they take all of the safety precautions. I have actually visited one of their plants in Cherokee, Ala. that is very similar to this one, and it was a very safe environment,” Ruckel said.

When asked whether he’d experienced any resistance to the construction of the new facility, Ruckel said he has not come into contact with resistance for the construction of the plant.

“I personally have not had any resistance. A lot of people are just happy to have good paying jobs with benefits in the community,” Ruckel said.

Ruckel said he is hopeful Nelson Brothers will create more jobs in the area.

“We look for them to be here several years down the road and to provide even more potential jobs in this area in the future,” he said.

According to Ruckel, the new plant will open January 2014.

“We are expecting it to be up and running by the end of January, I would say around the 24th or 25th,” Ruckel said.
