Two major bank robbery trials are set to begin on Monday in two court rooms in the Scioto County Courthouse. In one of those trials, Elvis P. Kerns, 34, of Wheelersburg, faces charges in the robbery of a Scioto County bank.
In April, authorities from Scioto and Lawrence counties identified Kerns as the man suspected of robbing Charter One Bank in Wheelersburg on April 5 and of robbing the US Bank location in Proctorville April 8. On April 24 the search ended when authorities located Kerns in Texas and arrested him.
It was the method of the robbery that alerted authorities in both counties to look at Kerns as the likely suspect. Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless said his detectives had been working with the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office detectives on the case since both robberies had a similar suspect and method of operation. As a result of that investigation, authorities in both counties decided on Kerns as the suspect in those robberies.
While Kerns was apparently on the run following the Proctorville robbery, Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini said his detectives were working several leads and received information that Kerns was possibly hiding in Seguin, Texas. Detectives contacted the Seguin Police Department and officers responded to a residence suspected of sheltering Kerns. Officers made a forceful entry into the residence and arrested Kerns.
In another trial, Chris Dsouza, 39, of Portsmouth, faces a charge of robbing WesBanco, 924 Gallia Street in Portsmouth on July 6. On that Saturday morning Portsmouth Police received an alarm that WesBanco was being robbed. Officers Tom Lancaster, Steve Brewer and Sergeant Carl Compton responded to the alarm.
“We arrested him in the 900 block of Third Street,” Lancaster said. “He was about two blocks away (from the robbery). He came straight up the alley, and was headed east on Third Street.”
