The Scioto Foundation will sponsor a UCAN (University/College Access Network) Go to College Carnival from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30, at the Southern Ohio Medical Center’s Friends Center in Portsmouth. Offering games, giveaways, prizes and fun, the carnival is planned for children grades K-4 and their parents, grandparents and guardians.
Designed with a “learning stations” format, the program will feature entertaining, age-appropriate activities with a subtle focus on “going to college.”
Activity stations will be based on themes such as college saving, career awareness and assessment, nearby colleges, good citizens, reading, healthy eating and a parent station offering information on the Ohio Saves program, Shawnee State University’s Adult Education and GED programs, college costs and planning for college. Southern Ohio Medical Center will have a station with fitness and nutrition activities staffed by Wendy Waugh and her Community Health Team, along with a nursing career station. A culinary arts instructor from the Scioto County Career and Technical College will give youngsters ideas about different restaurant jobs using hands-on activities.
The UCAN College Carnival is part of the Scioto Foundation’s effort to create a “college-going community that embraces and accepts the need for post-secondary education,” said SF Executive Director Kim Cutlip. “It is important to begin early to get our young people excited about going to college.”
Admission to the carnival is one non-perishable or canned food item. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
