A Facebook group was recently formed called, “Build it for Issac,” and the purpose of the group is to get people organized to construct a porch and a ramp for a handicapped resident of West Portsmouth.
“Our campaign is called, ‘Build it for Issac’ and our mission is to fulfill a four-year-old boy’s desire to be outdoors. In Issac’s case he can’t run outside to do that, he’s wheelchair bound. When he does go outside, he is swarmed by bugs, such as mosquitos in which he is highly allergic,” said M.J. Brickey, campaign organizer. “When he gets bit by a bug it leaves welts. He has very little control of his extremities so he is unable to shoo them away.”
She said Issac’s parents Tom and Valerie are not only full-time parents to Issac and his brother, “His dad works full-time and his mother is a full-time student at Shawnee State University,” Brickey said.
She said a number of local and regional business has stepped up and are supplying materials to aid in the construction efforts.
“What we would like to do is find the funds to build a screened-in porch for this child to be able to go outside,” Brickey said.
The project is anticipated to cost around $3,000.
“We have raised just more than $2,250 in three weeks, which is awesome. We are almost to our goal. We are starting to purchase building materials and construction has started,” Brickey said. “Once we reach our fundraising goal and the porch is on the home and it’s ready for him to roll out upon, then we will stop this campaign.”
For more information and updates on the progress of the porch visit the “Build it for Issac” group on Facebook.
