September is National Hunger Action Month, and Sand Hill International Pentecostal Church of Christ in Sand Hill, Ky. will host a fundraiser for hunger on Saturday, Sept. 7. The fundraiser will be a carnival type event and will be held at South Shore Rotary Park from noon until 5 p.m.

Pastor of Sand Hill, Gary Newman, said the theme for the carnival is “There’s no boundary on hunger.”

“Hunger has no boundary, there are people who are hungry all around our area, that is why we chose this theme,” Newman said.

Newman said the event has two purposes.

“We are trying to accomplish two things with this event, to raise money and food for our food pantry, and to help to raise awareness to our community that there are people in need, and we just want to help them,” Newman said.

Newman said Sand Hill International Pentecostal Church of Christ is a part of the Huntington Area Food Bank, of which Newman currently serves on the board on the board of directors.

According to Newman, his church fed 200 families on Tuesday through their food pantry which serves the community every second and last Tuesday of every month.

He said it will be their first attempt at a carnival type fundraiser and that they are looking forward to it with great anticipation.

“It’s just going to be a fun day, we are encouraging people to bring non-perishable food items for donation. We’ve already got the park and the sound stage for that day,” Newman said. “We’re going to have ‘hoops for soup’ on the basketball court and you get to shoot if you bring two cans of soup,.”

He also said there would be other games and inflatables for kids to enjoy, as well as live music.

“We’re reaching out to the community to see if we can provide help to people through the winter months. We understand that things are going to get real tough in the next few months, and we’re probably going to see an increase in more people needing food,” Newman said.
