GREENUP, Ky. — The Greenup County Health Department (GCHD) is joining forces with outdoor personality Tom Clay for a series of short videos about the health benefits of outdoor activities.

Clay said he is excited about partnering with GCHD to share his passion of the great outdoors to encourage health and wellness.

“I have had an outdoors radio show for the past 16 years, and I did some television work for the past six years as well. What the Greenup County Health Department is trying to do is get kids active, and get people outside, things of that nature,” Clay said. “They have just figured it out, that if you get outside, and get involved in things like camping, hiking, or fishing that don’t cost a lot of money, you can stay healthy at the same time.”

Health Department Director Chris Crum said outdoor activities are beneficial in lieu of fitness centers.

“Everyone knows we aren’t blessed with a fitness center in every town on every corner. However, we are blessed with a beautiful county that makes outdoor activity easy and fun,” Crum said.

The videos cover a wide variety of topics including: hiking, gardening, canoeing, swimming, hunting, fishing, and camping to name just a few.

Clay attributes his love for the outdoors to his childhood experiences.

“I was born and raised in South Shore, and did a lot of things out of doors. We went to Dreamland pool. My father was a hall of fame outdoors writer and photographer, and got us kids involved in an early age. He was also a steel mill worker at Detroit Steel Mill,” Clay said. “My mom, who worked at Martings, grew up on the Ohio River, and at an early age her father taught her how to fish. So all of my family, both of my parents were involved in the outdoors.”

The videos appear on the GCHD website at www.greenuphealth.com, and the GCHD Facebook page (www.facebook.com/greenuphealth).

Clay said enjoying the outdoors is opportunity that provides a wealth of resources.

“Mother Nature has given us wonderful resources and I want future generations not only to use it, but cherish it. If I can get someone interested in the outdoors and live a healthier lifestyle, then I’ve done my job,” Clay said.
