A mother and son died Christmas night in a fire in Lewis County, Ky.

According to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, firefighters from multiple departments responded to a fire at 1217 Montgomery Road at 10:48 p.m. Wednesday. Sheriff Johnny Bivens reported that heavy smoke and fire was coming from the north side of the residence when firefighters arrived. While searching the building, firefighters found an unconscious woman inside. Identified as Marilyn Fannin, age 84; she was removed from the building and taken to Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, where she died from her injuries.

As firefighters continued to battle the fire, a male victim was also located inside. He was identified as Fannin’s son, 65-year-old Daniel Fannin, and he also died from injuries at the scene.

Bivens reported that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but remains under investigation. Members of the Garrison, Firebrick, and Black Oak fire departments remained on the scene until the fire was extinguished. Lewis County Coroner Tony Gaydos also assisted on the scene with Portsmouth Ambulance
