SCIOTOVILLE — The body of a man has been sent to the Montgomery County Medical Examiner’s office for identification and investigation following an early morning fire. Portsmouth Fire Chief Bill Raison said shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday a fire broke out in a one-story cottage located at 1116 Rose St., in Sciotoville.
“Fire crews arrived on the scene of a fire in the living room area,” Raison said. “They made an entry, knocked the fire down, and discovered a body in that living room.”
Raison said it was at that point he received a call to come to the scene.
“Anytime we discover a fatality, they try to preserve as much of the scene as possible for the investigation,” Raison said. “They backed out and kept the fire knocked down and called for an investigation.”
In addition to Raison, Captain Eric Green, who is the investigator for the Portsmouth Fire Department, was called to the scene.
“He (Green) came in and contacted the (Scioto County) Coroner’s Office; had Doctor (Darren) Adams come out, and he contacted the State Fire Marshal and had them come down,” Raison said. “We always call the State Fire Marshal to assist on fatalities.”
Raison said those at the scene could not positively identify the man whose body was found, so that identification is expected to be made by the Coroner’s office.
