A man who was serving a 10-year sentence for rape has just been sentenced to another eight years in prison for an apparent attack on a corrections officer at Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. A Scioto County Common Pleas Court jury took only six minutes Monday to find Alonzo Johnson, 32, of Hamilton County, guilty of felonious assault on corrections officer Jeffrey Meier on June 7 of this year.
Under questioning by Assistant Scioto County Prosecutor Matthew Wisecup, witnesses testified that Johnson exited the dining hall and suddenly, without warning, struck Meier repeatedly in the head and face. Corrections officers reportedly quickly responded to assist Meier, and after a struggle that lasted several minutes, subdued Johnson. Meier reportedly sustained several injuries which have prevented him from returning to work, according to the prosecution.
Johnson became the third person this year to represent himself in the trial, though the court had named attorney Gene Meadows co-counsel. During sentencing, Wisecup argued that Johnson had a violent criminal history and had shown no remorse for his actions. Scioto County Prosecutor Mark Kuhn said Johnson, who finished his 10-year sentence in August, has been lodged in the Scioto County Jail while awaiting trial.
He will be transferred back into the custody of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction to serve his eight year sentence.
