Greenup County Public Library will soon be housed in a new facility Oct. 1, 2013, with the grand opening to take place in November.
Dorothy Griffith, Director of the Greenup County Public Library said the library staff, as well as the local community, are excited about the opening of the new library.
“We are so excited, we just can’t wait. Hopefully we will be in our new facility by Oct. 1. It is very beautiful, it has a very high ceiling, and the outside architecture is very beautiful. We will start moving books and things on Sept. 9,” Griffith said.
Griffith said the new building will provide much needed space for the library, and the services and programs they provide.
“It’s going to be twice as big as the present library. We have been very crowded. It will give us at least twice the square footage for the Genealogy and Local History collection which is very popular,” Griffith said.
According to Griffith, the new library will have an expanded children’s area, teenage area, and a community room which can be divided into two rooms, and study room.
“The circulation of the library, and the use of the library keeps expanding. Our circulation statistics are breaking records,” Griffith said.
She said there has been an increase in the number of patrons checking out books, using the computers and checking out DVDs.
“We are seeing people that we have never seen before, and that is one of the pluses,” Griffith said.
Griffith said the Greenup County Public Library will have a grand opening in November. We’d hope to open sooner than that, but the weather has not cooperated with us with the rain,” Griffith said.
She said the interior is finished, and all of the shelving is up, and are still waiting for the driveway and parking lot to be completed.
“We will begin to move the books and furnishings from the old facility on Sept. 9., of which the library will be closed for about three weeks, so materials that are being checked out right now have a due date of October,” Griffith said.
She said they are encouraging patrons to check out extra books, so that they will have plenty of things to read during the time that they are closed.
“Greenup County Library card holders will also be able to check out and return items at the South Shore and Flatwoods branches,” Griffith said.
According to Griffith, there is no immediate need for the hiring of new staff.
“We are just going to use our present staff at this time, so we do not have to add to that right now,” Griffith said.
Griffith said the cost on the new Greenup County Library building is not readily available.
“We are still paying construction contractors, so we don’t have the information on the cost of the building project right now, but we will not be raising any taxes, and we do not have to borrow any money, so it’s all taken care of, ” Griffith said.
Griffith said the November date for the opening of the new library to the public is forthcoming and will be announced soon.
