On the heels of what may have been Scioto County’s biggest heroin haul, members of the Southern Ohio Drug Task Force, with the assistance from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI&I) and members of the Special Response Team from the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, have eradicated a million dollars worth of marijuana.

Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini and Portsmouth Police Chief Robert Ware said the team was able to find and cut 1,100 Marijuana plants from various areas of Scioto County.

On Aug. 1, a large amount of heroin and cash was located on Ohio Department of Natural Resources property. More than a pound of suspected heroin, at an estimated street value of about $74,000, and about $12,000 in cash was recovered on the property located in West Portsmouth.

“These guys (Drug Task Force) worked about 38 hours straight on the heroin and marijuana busts together,” Scioto County Sheriff’s Captain David Hall said. “They do amazing work. They worked 38 hours straight to make a difference in our community. These guys do the behind-the-scenes work, and they’re what makes it happen to fight drug abuse in our communities.”

Hall said there are other unsung heroes in the fight against drug abuse.

“They have great families too, because without their support, these guys wouldn’t be able to do what they do,” Hall said. “These guys are all very dedicated, and they all do their work to make a difference.”

Donini and Ware took the time to thank the public for tips provided that may have led to any of the locations of the plants and to BCI&I and SOCF for their assistance.

Donini and Ware said anyone wishing to leave drug information for the Southern Ohio Drug Task Force may contact the Task Force tip line at 740-354-5656 or email drugs@sciotocountysheriff.com. All information will be kept confidential and anonymous.
