A crew from David Williams and Associates were busy Tuesday morning removing damaged parts from the Kiwanis playground in Tracy Park in order to replace them with new parts.

The crew could be finished installing the parts and the playground could be deemed safe to play on after an inspection from the city of Portsmouth Service Department.

“When they are done, it’s all done,” said John Johnson, President of the Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth. “This crew is from David Williams and Associates, which is the representative for Gametime. Gametime is the equipment manufacturer and everything that was related to the equipment that wasn’t customized is what’s be repaired right now.”

Johnson said the Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth was responsible for replacing all of the custom items that were damaged on the playground.

In June Johnson told the Daily Times that it will cost $12,500 to fix the damaged playground in Tracy Park.

In March a sizable tree in the park came up by its roots and smashed a large portion of the playground. After the tree fell on the structure was deemed unsafe to play on and was blocked off from us by the city.

City Service Director Bill Beaumont said his crews made several attempts to barricade the structure to no avail. People continued to tear down the temporary fences and use the damaged playground despite the safety risk.

Beaumont said a final inspection of the structure will be done by the city and Kiwanis before final payment is made to the company.

“We’ve already payed for the material, the final labor bill will be paid after the work is done and inspected,” Beaumont said.

Beaumont said that inspection could be done later this week and at that point it will be decided if the structure is deemed safe to play on again.
