Roy Rogers Festival expected to attract many

The Roy Rogers-Dale Evans Collectors Association (RRDECA) will present the 33rd Annual Roy Rogers Festival Aug. 3-6, at the Holiday Inn Express, 711 Second Street in Portsmouth. The Festival is typically known to attract national as well as international attention from Rogers fans from around the world.

Fans are all anxious to hear about the area where Rogers spent his boyhood years, according to a release from the RRDECA, which also stated that there are dealers from all over the country who offer Roy Rogers and Dale Evans memorabilia for sell. Additionally, the Roy Rogers Festival Facebook page reveals a series of enthusiastic conversations among Rogers fans who are excited about this year’s Festival.

Art Lewis and Janet Lewis of Portsmouth, said they have always been Roy Rogers fans, and have memories from Rogers’ childhood.

“Albert Hull, who was high school home room teacher at Minford High School for four years was in school with Roy Rogers, and he (Hull) shared that story with us while we were in school,” Janet Lewis said. “So that was very interesting.”

Art Lewis said having Roy Rogers from the local area is a positive thing.

“I can remember seeing him television, and seeing his programs, they were really nice to watch. It is great to know that we his is from the local area,” Art Lewis said.

Guest Stars for the Roy Rogers Festival include Dodie Rogers, Jon Patterson, Steve Connors, Darby Hinton, and Don Collier. A special surprise guest, whose identity is being withheld will also attend the Festival.

The Roy Rogers Festival schedule will include:

Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m. Reception in Hospitality Room.

Thursday, Aug. 4, 9 a.m. Dealers room open, 10:30 a.m. Q & A with the Stars, Tour to Roy’s boyhood home 1 p.m., Dealers Room closed 5 p.m., Hospital room with food and entertainment 7 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 5, Dealers room open, Tour to Roy’s boyhood home 10:30 a.m., Q & A with Stars in hospitality room 2 p.m., Dealers Room closed 5 p.m., Hospitality Room with food and entertainment 7 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 6, Dealers Room open from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., Breakfast with the Stars 8 a.m. until 9 a.m., Costume Contest 10 a.m. Dogwood Pass Western Show across Second Street in front of the Holiday Inn from 1 p.m. until. Grand Banquet with the Stars 7 p.m.

The costs include the following:

Wednesday – Reception – $15

Thursday – Hospitality – $14

Friday – Hospitality – $14

Saturday – Breakfast – $12

Saturday – Grand Banquet – $35
