How do you beat the heat when it’s 90 degrees and you’re trying to have fun? Easy, have even more fun. That cool-off was courtesy of the inflatable water slide at Customer Appreciation Day at Westside IGA in West Portsmouth.

Children were going through bouncy rides, throwing at targets, getting their faces painted and a lot more.

“This is something we’ve been doing since we bought the store 14 years ago,” Dave Smith, who, along with his wife, Cindy Smith, owns the store. “A few years ago, the warehouse had a Kid’s Fest ad and we’ve just continued it every year. It’s just something for the community.”

One of the attractions was the food booth where hot dogs went into anxious hands as quick as they could be prepared.

Smith said several businesses chipped in to make the day a success – Staker’s Pharmacy, WesBanco, Pepsi Cola, Coca-Cola and the hot dogs were donated by Eckrich and the buns were courtesy Heiner’s Bakery.

Cindy was helping with the hot dogs and took a quick break from the heat. “We’re pushing through,” Cindy said.

While the heat was somewhat oppressive, she just kept going.

“Everybody is really thrilled and appreciative of this, something good for the kids to do to get out of the house, cool off and have some fun,” Cindy said.

The turnout was large and children were having fun from the entrance to Westside IGA to the church next door and children were lined up at every attraction.

“It’s really big over here. This is really a big turnout for the community,” Dave said. “We just had one out at Minford a couple of weeks ago. It was about half this size, but it was new, so I look for a big crowd out there in the future.”

It was a day for the family to come together and enjoy the games and rides, and smiles were in abundance.

“It’s just our way to give back – customer appreciation – something for the kids to do before the (Scioto County) fair,” Dave said. “Most of the kids say they enjoy this more than the fair because it’s all free.”

Dave said several businesses chipped in to make the day a success – Staker’s Pharmacy, WesBanco, Pepsi Cola, Coca-Cola in addition to Eckrich and Heiner’s.
