Scholarships Awarded at the 91st Annual Jefferson Alumni

Thanks to the vision and generosity of Ron Lykins and his late wife, Ruth, and with contributions from many Jefferson Alumni members or their families, eight deserving graduating seniors were awarded $500. scholarships at the Jefferson Alumni on May 28, 2016. The Jefferson Alumni members funded four scholarships and Ron Lykins funded the Dr. James P. and Suzanne Branham Scholarship and the three Don & Flo Armstrong Memorial Scholarships were funded by Ron and members of the Armstrong family.

The 2016 Jefferson Alumni Scholarship recipients were:

Rose Remington is a graduate of Waverly High School where she was a member of Rotary Interact, Student Council and several clubs. Rose plans to attend the University of Cincinnati and major in psychology and hopes to work in the mental health field to help make a difference. Rose is the granddaughter of Tim Daniel and Carol Breeden Daniel, class of 1967.

Kayleigh Robinson is a graduate of Manchester High School and took college classes and maintained a 4.0 GPA. She plans to go to medical school with the long term goal of becoming an anesthesiologist. Kayleigh is the granddaughter of Gracie Mae Graham Samples, class of 1956.

Emily Jade Spriggs is a graduate of North Adams High School where she had a 4.0 GPA and was Co-Valedictorian. She was in Beta Club, National Honor Society, and was on the golf and softball teams. She plans to attend Shawnee State University to become an Occupational Therapist. Jade is the granddaughter of Patricia Dillow Hayslip, class of 1961.

Cheyenne Weakley is a graduate of South Webster High School where she was a member of National Honor Society, National English Honor Society and the Lady Jeeps basketball team. She plans to attend Shawnee State University and major in chemistry and hopes to become a pharmacist. Cheyenne is the granddaughter of the late Katheryn Shiveley Evans, class of 1955.

The 2016 recipients of Don & Flo Armstrong Memorial Scholarships were:

Ashley Hackworth is a graduate of West Union High School where she also took many dual-credit classes and maintained a 3.9 GPA which earned her the honor of class salutatorian. She plans to attend Shawnee State University to major in early childhood education. Ashley is the granddaughter of Sarah Hackworth, class of 1967.

Haley Knauff is a graduate of West Union High School where she was a member of FFA and a cheerleader. Haley plans to attend Morehead State University to obtain a bachelor of nursing degree and her hope is to one day work at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Haley is the great-granddaughter of the late Jack Knauff class of 1944 and the granddaughter of Rodney Knauff, class of 1970.

Nathan Mielke is a graduate of Scioto Dublin High School where he played basketball and was 4-year captain of the lacrosse team and was named to all-region. He has been accepted in the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University and hopes to eventually earn an MBA. He is Valedictorian having a 4.207 GPA and a 30 on the ACT. Nate is the grandson of Ron Lykins, class of 1959.

The 2016 recipient of the Dr. James P. & Suzanne Branham Scholarship was:

Kristen Grooms is a graduate of West Union High School where she was a member of National Honor Society and Beta Club. She plans to attend Shawnee State University in the Allied Health/Associate of Applied Science/Dental Hygiene program. Kristen is the granddaughter of Donald Grooms, Jr.,class of 1964.

Since the inception of the scholarship program in 2003, there have been seventy-nine (79) scholarships awarded at the Jefferson Alumni. These scholarships have been made possible by the continuing generosity of many alumni members and their families. The Jefferson Alumni Association is a 501(c)3 non-profit and contributions are tax deductible.
