Crisis Center Announces 1000th Admission

Portsmouth, OH – After opening doors in January 2014, the Crisis Center announced that it reached one thousand admissions in February 2016. Operated by The Counseling Center, Inc. and funded by the ADAMHS Board, this ten bed facility is a free service for adult men and women who experience an acute mental health or alcohol and/or drug related crisis. The primary goals of the Crisis Center are to serve the residents of Scioto, Lawrence, and Adams counties by linking them to local resources and providers, reducing ER visits, increasing jail diversion, and decreasing admissions to the state psychiatric hospital. In just over two years of operation, The Crisis Center has provided mental health and addiction support for over seven hundred forty-four different individuals. Services offered at the Crisis Center include room and board, individual and group counseling, case management services, and diagnostic assessments. The average length of stay is four days, with a discharge referral to one of several local community treatment or mental health providers to receive follow up treatment or counseling services. The discharge referral is based on the diagnosis rendered by a licensed provider and is considered “dual-diagnosis” majority of the time, meaning the individual is reporting both alcohol and/or other drug and mental health concerns. The Crisis Center is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Crisis Center also operates a toll free hotline and on average receives six hundred to eight hundred calls per month. Calls come in to the hotline from those who are experiencing a mental health or addiction crisis, need emotional support, and/or information referral services. The staff of the Crisis Center attributes much of the program’s success to the local ADAMHS Board of Scioto, Lawrence and Adams counties, including the Executive Director Sue Shultz and staff for initiating the program’s start up and continued funding and support.
