Have you opened your medicine cabinet only to once again notice all of those old outdated prescriptions still there taking up space? Saturday you can make it a point to finally get rid of all those medications. Kroger is joining together with the Portsmouth Police Department and Cardinal Health to provide the public with a safe and convenient way to dispose of unused and expired medications at local Kroger stores.

The Drug Disposal Day events will be held Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kroger store, located at 811 Gay Street in Portsmouth.

“Neither flushing nor discarding of medications in a household trash can is an ideal disposal option,” Portsmouth Police Captain Debra Jenkins, said. “We encourage the public to take advantage of drug disposal events and reduce the chance that others may accidentally take or intentionally misuse the unneeded medication.”

Portsmouth Police officers will be collecting the unused or expired medications in the parking lot of the Portsmouth Kroger location throughout the mid-day. Officers will accept and properly dispose of pills, liquids, syringes, gels and patches, while inhalers will not be accepted. Kroger pharmacists will also be on hand to answer questions and educate the public on the dangers of prescription drug misuse and abuse.

“When taken as prescribed, prescription drugs can relieve pain and save lives” Kroger Columbus Division Pharmacy Manager Doug Cornelius said. “Unfortunately, unused prescription medications often fall into the wrong hands, which can lead to misuse and even death. Hosting safe disposal events is one way Kroger is contributing to the prevention of prescription drug abuse.”
