The United Way of Scioto and Adams Counties is set to host its 4th annual Ducky Derby on Aug. 31 at the Court Street Landing in Portsmouth at 11 a.m.


According to Mary Ann Miars-Peercy, United Way of Scioto and Adams Counties executive director, Pistol’s Auto has donated a 1997 S-10 Truck as the grand prize for this years event.


“We have a kids race that’s a prelude to our main event. Any kids (12 and under) that want to come down for the free race can, come down at 10 a.m. and we’ll get them registered. Every child that participates gets a prize,” Miars-Peercy said. “They (kids) will get their own ducks that’s dropped in the water and Shawnee Boat Club will takes care of all of the boats and equipment for us.”


Miars-Peercy said ducky derby tickets are $5 each, with proceeds going towards children’s literacy programs of the United Way.


“This is a program we call, United We Read. (Through this program) we go into the schools, read to the kids and distribute books to them,” Miars-Peercy said.


Miars-Peercy said they they have been able to gather close to 60 prizes for this years Ducky Derby.


“Prizes will be awarded as they come across the finish line. The first duck will receive the grand prize, as each duck comes across we have a system where we mark those off, and the very last duck is our lame duck and the owner will receive $50,” Miars-Peercy said.


She said they would encourage onlookers to come to the race at the Court Street Landing to watch. She said the 2013 Ducky Derby winner was Peggy Jones of Portsmouth.


Tickets can be obtained for the Ducky Derby can be purchased at Desco in Portsmouth, Portsmouth Feed and Supply, Dr. Karr’s office, Buckeye Dairy Bar, the United Way offices located at 1671 Grant Street in Portsmouth or from www.uwsciotocounty.org.
