First River Run 5K held

PORTSMOUTH — With blue skies and sun shine, the first Portsmouth River Days Run On the River 5K got underway Saturday morning. Runners, walkers, and and infants being transported in strollers, came out to participate in the River Run.

Kelli Richardson, a board member and secretary of Portsmouth River Days, said the event is part of the fundraising efforts towards the annual Portsmouth River Days Festival.

“We are having a Portsmouth River Days Run On the River. We don’t have a monetary goal in mind, we’re just trying to raise money for the 2016 Portsmouth River Days Festival, so we’re doing different activities from now until River Days,” Richardson said. “Today was great. We had Tristate Racer from Huntington to come down, they did the entire race. We had about 50 to 60 participants, so I am thrilled with that, for our first time. This is the first time that we have ever done this, and we’ve had beautiful weather, so you can’t ask for anything better than that.”

The finish line for the Run On the River 5k was set up on Front Street outside of the Welcome Center in downtown Portsmouth. Local disc jockey, DJ Franky Frank, provided music for the crowd to enjoy, as walkers and runners completed the course. A host of local vendors were also present at the event.

Teresa Bratton, co-chairperson for the Entertainment Committee of Portsmouth River Days, said she is pleased with the outcome of the Run On the River 5K event.

“I think this event has gone very well. I am happy with it, and we have had a good turn out,” Bratton said. “I am sure that this is something that we can plan on doing next year as well.”
