On Monday morning, the Scioto County Commissioners dedicated the courthouse annex to the people of Scioto County.

“We’ve been using a lot of the space in the annex for a long time, paying a considerable amount of rent each year,” said Mike Crabtree, chairman of the Scioto County Commissioners. “We’ve worked on purchasing this with a number of people, who we’re very good at getting this thing done.”

Earlier this year the commissioners approved the purchase of the annex from then-owner Ken Rase for $956,022, and an additional $200,000 to purchase parking lots on Court Street. Crabtree said the purchase is aimed at saving the county money in the long run.

“By consolidating operations into one building and eliminating lease payments it’s the opinion of the commissioners and the Scioto County Auditor’s office the county will realize a return on its investment in nine years,” he said.

County offices currently housed in the annex include Scioto County Prosecutor, Fourth District Court of Appeals Judge Matt McFarland and Scioto County Veterans Services. Each office has lease agreements and rent to pay with the current owner.

According to the commissioners, “the purchase of the annex and parking lots compliment the commissioner’s short and long term strategic plan to eliminate waste and reduce operating costs. By purchasing the annex building, current leases being paid by the county for offices in the annex will be eliminated.”

Various Scioto County elected officials were in attendance at the ceremony Monday. Commissioners Doug Coleman and Bryan Davis echoed Crabtree’s comments, saying it took a lot of people coming together to make the purchase a reality.

“We dedicated this building to the people of Scioto County and I really do believe this building in the long run will pay dividends for the county,” Davis said.
